Yikes! Severe allergies are a problem - perhaps CFE should set up a competition? Or try to partner with restaurant ratings websites like Yelp? They already have the infrastructure to link to most restaurants in a given area.

Part of the blame falls into the laps of the Aerospace industry and their lack of penetration into schools and colleges. Here in Ohio, GE and P&G are in every school. And guess where a lot of the college graduates work?

Most traditional aerospace companies, and engineering in general, are integrators. They aren't particularly interested in the engineering details of cutting edge technology, as long as it works with the system. This allows (or forces) smaller risk-takers to create. It could be in the best interest of the students and UM to foster relationships with these companies, rather than the large integrators. It's something that would have been beneficial to start my career.

The last paragraph says it all. Unfortunately we have a congress full of politicians that are ignorant, stupid, and greedy.

They have no interest in fixing or legislating anything that does not help themselves. Take the health care. If they wanted to fix the American problem on health care, they should start by accepting the same health care system as the citizens. If they did that they would fix it in a hurry. And why should members of congress have any better system than the citizens of The United States.

Another problem currently is the unemployment, that has been in the making for the last 60 years, caused by the same ignorant, stupid, and greedy politicians.

That is some great anecdotal evidence, especially your experience with the military. I know I too have felt that I perform better when a lot is expected of me (though with the caveat of not being driven so hard that I can no longer perform). I recall classes and work efforts that had dynamic leaders that pushed us to be the best we could be. Oftentimes it turned into us wanting to prove ourselves both for our own pride and to get approval from the leader.

Do you know of any studies showing the psychology behind this way of leading? I would be interesting to see how they experimented with this behavior in a laboratory setting to see what drives the specifics of behavior.

Without question Michigan's entire economy is going to need an extreme makeover in the wake of the devastation created by the UAW. Auto industry jobs will never again allow non-college educated workers to make wages and benefits that exceed many doctors.
Michigan does have some very fine university's that may be able to address the question of social entrepreneurship.

When I remodeled my bathroom two years ago I was blown away by the vast array of choices and possibilities available for shower installations. I had to balance water usage/budget concerns/luxury and came up with a set with a thermostatic shower valve (no cold showers) and two heads, one hand held, one that is a "rain" shower head. The set together was probably 20x the price of a standard single shower head, but I've yet to be disappointed when I use the shower. I was unable to even consider German/Swiss shower heads due to their stratospheric prices and long lead times, but maybe the next time around...
